The reign of the new Big Three is over. Kevin Garnett is having serious offseason knee surgery, Big Baby and Leon Powe are gone, and Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are another year older. Let's face it, the presently constituted Celtics' best days are behind them. Sure, Rajon Rondo is a budding All-Star, but the rest of the team is on the back nine of their careers. This team will not contend for a title next season.

You're wrong, Plantier. KG's surgery isn't going to be nearly as serious as many knee surgeries. Either Powe or Baby will be back. And the Celtics will add another big. Reverse it, and the Celtics, using a big man rotation of Kendrick Perkins, Glen Davis, and Brian Scalabrine (that's it!) took Dwight Howard to seven games.
PlantierPotential said the following @ 05/18/2009, 2:39pm

Oh please ... just ask Tom Brady about how serious knee surgery is. Big Baby will NOT be back (too expensive) and if Leon Powe comes back, it will have to be after the All-Star break due to (what a coincidence) knee surgery.
SportsGary said the following @ 05/18/2009, 2:57pm

Do your research, PP. KG doesn't have any ligament tears. Brady did. If someone wants to overpay for Baby, let them. Perkins, Garnett, and Scalabrine are ALREADY a more formidable frontcourt trio than they've been using the last three months. They just need to add one more big, reliable body as a backup. Who's better, right now, than the Celtics with a healthy Big Three? Cleveland. Possibly the Lakers. That's it. If your definition of "window closed" is being one of the top three teams in the NBA, then I guess I have to agree with you. I'll take my chances with a veteran, championship team like the Celtics in a Conference Finals situation next year.
PlantierPotential said the following @ 05/18/2009, 3:03pm

First off ... KG's knee injury was apparently bad enough to keep him out of the playoffs (but that's no big deal, right?), and who knows if he'll ever be himself again. (Can you REALLY say you know for sure?) Besides KG, are you really confident Ray Allen can still bring it? I mean he was shut down by J.J. Reddick. J.J. Reddick!! And as for Pierce, you have to consider the injury that kept him out of the Orlando series. Oh wait, he played? Huh ... who knew? You're pinpointing the bigs, but I say they have problems elsewhere, too. Besides the Cavaliers (who I could easily see winning the next 2-to-3 titles) and Lakers, you're forgetting about the Nuggets, the Rockets with McGrady and Yao, the Magic (OK, they're probably still too soft), and the Bulls and Hawks, both of whom are on the upswing.
SportsGary said the following @ 05/18/2009, 3:16pm

Pierce played more games than any other player in the history of the NBA over the past two seasons. He could use the rest. Allen's getting older, but how many big shots did he make in the playoffs? Since you're posing all these questions, let me ask you one: Is there a point guard in the NBA outside of Chris Paul that has more upside than Rajon Rondo? The Celtics still have pieces. Boy do they have pieces. Take LeBron off the Cavs, or Kobe off the Lakers, and we're having this talk about those teams, too. Do the Cavs or Lakers even have a player outside of LeBron that you could compare to a Rajon Rondo? Does Kobe have an NBA Finals MVP like Paul Pierce to be his wingman like KG does? Bring KG back, all is fixed, the whiners stop whining, the haters stop hating.
PlantierPotential said the following @ 05/18/2009, 4:24pm

"How many big shots did Ray Allen make in the playoffs?" The answer: NOT ENOUGH! You make a good point abotu Rondo, but even you will admit he played better against the Bulls than he did against the Magic ... and where would he be without a supporting cast that includes Pierce and Allen? And of course the Lakers aren't the same Lakers without Kobe, just as the Cavs aren't title contenders without LeBron. But let's stay in reality here ... the Cavs DO have LeBron and the Lakers DO have Kobe. Will the Celtics have an effective KG next season? I'm not convinced.

I think that the Celts still have one more serious run, but after next year, it doesn't look so good unless we can make a huge trade or free agent signing.

alstublieft posted @ 05/18/2009, 3:59pm

At the risk of sounding ignorant, I agree...I think the Celtics have a few more surprises in store for us...they just need a little time to recharge the batteries.

Brady posted @ 05/18/2009, 4:50pm

Look for Rasheed Wallace to join the team as another big man. They have at least 2 more years of championship caliber team.

Special Sauce posted @ 05/18/2009, 5:22pm

I have a lot of faith in Danny-Boy's ability to rebuild this bench. I'd love to see Davis return but I fear that he just made himself a lot of money. That said, if Ainge was able to add a guy like R.Wallace, as Brady mentioned, then I think we would be ok up front. Personally, I'd welcome Starbury back as he is as good of an option at back-up PG as Danny can expect. And with a off-season and the return of KG I believe Starbury would be fine.

fiorelladad posted @ 05/18/2009, 5:52pm

This would be Marbury's chance to prove his worth without any excuse whatsoever. Danny has a tough off season in his hands. He has to squeeze every ounce of opportunity with the Big Three and sign/trade whoever helps us do that, all the while thinking about building around Rondo for the near future and the free agent class of 10.

Walpole Joe posted @ 05/18/2009, 5:55pm

I believe that Ray Allen may be in the last year of his contract. If that is so, he may be of interest to some team that want to off-load a big contract after one year. He has been very inconsistent the last two years, especially in the play-offs. The Celts need a wing player who can shoot consistently, a big man or two and a #2 PG. Walker, Giddensand Pruitt have to show more or they will be gone. Baby and/or Powe will be resigned. Scalabrine will be in the last year of his contract, thank goodness. Maybe someone will take him off our hands. Mikki Moore should be long gone along with Stephon Marbury. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least 5 new players on the team next year, and w/o a 1st round draft choice, these new players will have to come in deals.

If the Celts stay as is, their chances to be to be a viable contender next year is minimal. The "Big 3" are aging before our eyes and their big contracts will preclude the team from doing much to substantially improve the team or even to retain people like Baby, Powe or Rondo (next year).

twentythree9 posted @ 05/18/2009, 6:13pm

No way this team is done! I agree with Pierce! I would take a healthy Celtics team as it exists today against anybody. For crying out loud, like SportsGary said, we had a big man rotation of Perk, Baby and Scal, and took one of the deepest front lines in the NBA to 7!

You will have another year of improvement out of Perk and Rondo to boot.

Whole key, I agree, is the return of KG and his effectiveness. I tell you what, though, if he heals I'm certain he'll still have game left in him. He didn't look right this year starting after the first Laker game, and he should only be better than that. Too many times saw little guards getting shots in the paint off against him. If he's healthy, that ain't gonna happen!

Gunnerkat posted @ 05/18/2009, 6:41pm

The window is closing, but we have one more run in us. Rivers needs to limit minutes for the big three during the regular season, if and when he can pull them out HE MUST!! We need a big man who can play defense as well as a shooter of the bench.

Sonny_Corlione posted @ 05/18/2009, 8:22pm

You have to expect one more year of highly competitive play. After that I think the contracts are all done. So, with that in mind; closing, yes, closed, no.

Coots posted @ 05/18/2009, 8:31pm

Celts definitely have some more gas in the tank. The Spurs always said the reason they couldn't win back to back is b/c of the injuries. They always regrouped the next year. If Garnett can come back, C's should be in good shape. I'd try to keep Big Baby. He's developed into a solid 6th man. I don't see how anyone could want to keep Marbury after watching him. He looks like a shell of his old self. He was playing "hot potato" with the ball out there. I'd hand Mikki Moore his walking papers as well--worthless unless you want him to "hack-a-Howard."

Big Dubbs posted @ 05/18/2009, 10:23pm

The window is closing but far from closed. Obviously the health of KG and PP is paramount, but Ainge will have the task of building the roster with role players....the depth this year was exposed and that is a shame after a 27-2 start

Big Dubbs posted @ 05/18/2009, 10:25pm

with regards ro Sonny_C's contract comment, I believe the Big 3's expire in 3 str8 yrs (allen, PP, KG i think)...

kmac posted @ 05/19/2009, 4:56am

People, calm down on KG. First, do your research Kilgore, his surgery is for a BONE SPUR. That is nothing! It's not serious AT ALL! From my expereince, and having surgery to remove a Bone Spur, I can tell you a bone spur can be VERY painful when trying to play. It's just calcium build up around the bone. That's not a tear or structural damage, big difference. They shave/clean it off and your good to go. Rehab can take anywhere from 6-8 weeks. KG will be back to form in plenty of time before Camp in October. With rest, and rehab. the bone spur can heal, and that is exactly why KG did not have surgery right away, hoping it would feel good enough to play and get back on the court, it just didn't happen. A Bone Spur is not something that is career ending or has an impact on your game once it is fixed via surgery. Ligament tears do. That an entirely different game (curious to see how Brady comes back). So, KG will be back to good ol KG in 09-10. The Big 3 aren't even in their mid 30's, their approaching, but I think we have 2, POSSIBLY 3 years left to make a run with the big 3, depending on health of course and signability.

Perk should be at center stage in these discussions about the C's future, but he seems an afterthought. He played great, while hurt, against the defensive player of the year, and Allstar Superman. He has shown his commitment to offseason work to improve each year. With the confidence he will have gained in KG's absence, he will be a key contributor going forward. Yes, he and KG will need improved backup. So will PP and RR. We all know it's about who's healthy, but the big three will be in a strong position to rebound (no pun intended)with an improved bench. Danny has his work cut out for him. Does he have the heart for it?

usmc67 posted @ 05/19/2009, 10:26am

yes I beleive if celts were healthy with garnet and powe powe..we be in it..

soxnfinsfan posted @ 05/19/2009, 10:45am

They still have one maybe even two years left to get it done again!

00chief00 posted @ 05/19/2009, 12:11pm

Injuries playe d ahuge role in the celtics demise this year. Yes as players get older the are more apt to get injured, but I don't think this team is done yet. 2 more quality years should be expected.

CelticsWarbird12 posted @ 06/05/2009, 6:54pm

PP, you are a bum, get out of here with that crap. we signed KG and ray ray two years ago, we won the title the first year and made it to the semi's this year without our best player but yet our window is closed??

JohnnyBan posted @ 06/07/2009, 7:52pm

you have to belive that Ainge is going to make a move for the present and the future. yeah i would have to say that pierce and all are starting to age but its not starting to show pierce still goes out every game and puts up numbers and he will retire as a celtic. Garnetts knee is uncomparable to Tom Bradys,Garnett didnt tear anything. They should keep Davis and resign Powe to a minimum cause he can contribute even if its after tht all-star break. rondo is going to be a all star player and like i said Ainge is going to make some moves that will wow us because thats the type of person he is, no one ever seen the big three coming and dont be suprised if there is another move even if that means trading Allen for some young talent. But there biggest concern is building the bench up to ease all the playing time on garnett and pierce so things like garnetts injury wont happen i cant wait to see what happens its going to be interesting especially seeing how every team is looking foward to 2010.
